Thermal conductivity of the Earth's lower mantle

Xiaoli Tang, Moses C. Ntam, Jianjun Dong, Emma S. G. Rainey and Abby Kavner

Geophysical Research Letters, Volume 41, Issue 8, 2014

Abstract: The thermal conductivity of the Earth's lower mantle is a crucial parameter that influences the thermal evolution of the Earth, mantle dynamics, and heat flux across the core-mantle boundary. In this study, we present a comprehensive investigation of the thermal conductivity of Earth's lower mantle minerals using first-principles calculations. Our results provide insights into heat transfer mechanisms within the Earth's interior and have implications for geophysical models of mantle convection and the thermal history of our planet.
